Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed that he hopes that US President Donald Trump will ask Israel to "stop" the war.
A good start, according to Erdogan, would be to cut off the supply of weapons to Israel from the US.
"Trump has promised to end the conflicts... We want him to keep these promises and tell Israel to 'stop'. To begin with, it can start by cutting off the support of arms to Israel, in order to stop its aggression in the Palestinian and Lebanese lands", said Erdogan.
Turkey has strongly criticized Israel's military offensives in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, and has cut off trade with Israel. Ankara has also joined a genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
Erdogan insisted that Trump's presidency will have a major impact on the political and military balances in the Middle East. He also said that maintaining the current American position would only deepen the conflict, which after Gaza was extended to Lebanon with the Israeli bombings, where the Jewish state also sent ground troops across the border.
Erdogan hopes to improve strained relations with the United States by inviting Trump for a visit to Turkey.
Outgoing US President Joe Biden did not visit Turkey during his term in office, and Erdogan's planned visit to the White House earlier this year never took place, hinting at frosty relations between the two countries. The two presidents have recently clashed over relations with Israel after the launch of attacks in Gaza.
Trump's victory has been received positively in Turkey. The Turkish lira touched its highest level this week, while Istanbul stocks rose more than 5%.
