Trump returns to the head of the USA in a world in chaos, will he manage to

The European Union will be the biggest loser of the US presidential election...

Paris - It's hard not to fall into repetition, and not to conclude that Donald Trump's victory in Tuesday's presidential election is also a victory for autocrats of all stripes. The former president and now the future head of the United States is certainly an unpredictable figure.

But his re-election for a second term, changes the game precisely in a period of tensions and conflicts, which the world had not seen for a long time. His return to the White House symbolically marks the end of an era.

Even though it may seem excessive, even the end of a world that is already "entering water" from all sides: the world of multilateralism born in 1945, immediately after the end of the Second World War. A world where the American superpower was both the guardian and protector of the globe, for better or for worse.

For Europeans, this victory brings back to mind an unforgettable image, that of the famous G7 summit in 2018 in Quebec, Canada, where Trump was photographed sitting in his seat with his arms crossed, and with a defiant look at of those present.

Across from him stood then-German Chancellor Angela Merkel, her head bowed to him and her hands resting on the table, surrounded by other Western leaders. That moment of confrontation, an iconic moment captured by a photographer, is in fact the nightmare that haunts supporters of liberal democracy as Trump makes a spectacular comeback on the national and international stage.

A changed Trump?

Is it the same Donald Trump? The last election campaign, characterized by verbal aggression and excesses, showed that Donald Trump is still... Donald Trump. His personality has not changed at all. What has changed since 2016, the year of his first election as president, is the state of the world.

Today we are experiencing two major wars: the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the conflict in the Middle East. Added to these developments is the great US-China rivalry, which has only escalated since Donald Trump himself instigated it.

In this context, the unpredictability of the next US president is anything but reassuring. To understand what awaits us, it is enough to see who his favorite interlocutors are. Within the European Union, there is Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, the leader of the Eurosceptics and head of Vladimir Putin's fan club on our continent.

Trump has cited him as a prime example at his rallies, listing him as a list of far-right thinkers who have dictated the Republican nominee's agenda.

Assessment of consequences

Thus, the European Union will be the biggest loser of the US presidential election. Or at least the EU as we know it. How Trump handles the war in Ukraine, which he has promised - let's not forget - to "end within 24 hours", will also shape what comes next.

Should he end US support for Ukraine, or pressure President Volodymyr Zelensky to negotiate from a position of weakness with Moscow for a peace deal in exchange for painful territorial concessions, the influence it will be felt by all of Europe, which will be weakened.

The return of Donald Trump to the head of America will not calm the waters in the Middle East either. Now the American security guarantee within NATO is at stake, because the country will be headed by a man who previously threatened the North-Atlantic alliance.

Moreover, the trade wars it will trigger will shake Europe hard. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who openly supported the victory of the Republican candidate, hopes that the latter will give him a free hand in his extensive military campaign in Gaza, Lebanon and especially against Iran. Therefore, we are still far from finished assessing the global consequences of Trump's return to the head of the US. /Adapted "Pamphlet" from "Worldcrunch"
