Helicopter carrying tourists to Mykonos crashes in Athens

A private helicopter, chartered to transport a small group of tourists to the island of Mykonos, crashed into the sea south of Athens on Sunday afternoon.

The incident occurred a few minutes after takeoff and was witnessed by dozens of holidaymakers on the beach, while the causes remain unclear. According to reports from the National News Agency in Greece, there were five people on board - the pilot and four foreign tourists - who managed to get to shore and are out of danger, with minor injuries.

The pilot allegedly identified a technical problem during takeoff and asked the passengers to jump into the sea, while he himself remained on board trying to stabilize the helicopter and gain altitude.

A Coast Guard vessel and a land vehicle were immediately dispatched to the scene to assist in the rescue operation and to remove the helicopter from the water. A private diver also participated in the operation.

Meanwhile, the Athens Prosecutor's Office has ordered a preliminary investigation to determine the causes of the crash and whether there is criminal liability. The 57-year-old pilot was arrested by port authorities and later released, but has been ordered to participate in the preliminary investigation.
