Lyudmila Navalnaya, the mother of Russian opposition politician Alexey Navalny, who died in an Arctic penal colony last week, said today that she had seen her son's body.
Navalny's mother and wife had previously said they had been denied access to the body of the outspoken Kremlin critic.
Lyudmila Navalnaya said she saw her son's body in the town of Salekhard, near the prison where he had been held since December, and that she had signed his death certificate. She further raised allegations that investigators were "blackmailing" her into deciding the terms of her son's burial.
" They are blackmailing me, setting conditions on where, when and how Alexey should be buried ," she said in a video posted on her son's YouTube channel.
She also claimed that the Russian Investigative Committee, which was investigating the circumstances of her son's death, had tried to bury his body "secretly without saying goodbye".
She said investigators claim they know the cause of death and have all the legal medical records.
In turn, Navalny's wife, Yulia Navalnaya, had earlier accused Russian authorities of "hiding" his body in an attempt to mask the cause of his death. She said they had been "pathetically lied to" and were waiting for "the traces of another Putin Novichok to disappear".
The Kremlin has said that an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Navalny's death is "ongoing" and the results are currently "unknown". Claims by Navalny's mother that she had seen his body come almost a week after his death was announced on February 16.
