NATO is worried about a Russian attack. Experts are already watching the Kremlin's preparations for such an action...
Military experts warn that Russia is preparing for war with NATO. A new legislative initiative in the Russian parliament has raised alarm bells. According to a report by the Kyiv Independent, Russian lawmakers introduced a bill on July 22 that would increase military conscription from 6 months to 1 year.
The Russian government had previously agreed to increase military spending and create new military districts. "The development comes after recent Ukrainian warnings of a massive increase in Russian military spending and the creation of new military districts last year, which experts say are possible preparations for future wars outside Ukraine," the newspaper writes.
“All these components, new military districts, changes in mobilization and increased defense spending, show that Russia is preparing for a protracted war, not only in Ukraine, but also against NATO,” Kateryna Stepanenko, an analyst and deputy head of the Russia team at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), told the Kyiv Independent. If the law is passed, it could also be considered a covert mobilization.
Russia plans to spend $1.1 trillion on military by 2026
Russian President Vladimir Putin had previously avoided a general mobilization. "Russia has devoted significant resources and time in recent years to changing its mobilization system, digitizing it, making it more inclusive, and investing heavily in military-patriotic education," Stepanenko said.
According to Ukrainian intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov, Moscow plans to spend about $1.1 trillion on rearmament by 2036, an investment unprecedented since the collapse of the Soviet Union. "There is a total mobilization of the politics, economy and society of the Russian Federation to be ready for the next large-scale war," the newspaper quoted Budanov as saying.
Inspector General warns of Russian attack on NATO countries
The German Inspector General, Carsten Breuer, also warns of a possible Russian attack on NATO. Russia produces hundreds of tanks every year, many of which could be used for an attack on NATO member states in the Baltics by 2029 or even earlier, he told the BBC. "Not every tank goes to Ukraine, but rather it also flows into reserves and new military structures that are always oriented towards the West," the German general said.
There is a goal and a buildup of reserves for a possible future attack on NATO member states in the Baltics. Russia produced 4 million rounds of 152mm artillery ammunition in 2024, and not all of them are destined for Ukraine, Breuer added.
Therefore, NATO members should reinvest in their military. "What we need to do now is step on the gas and say to everyone: hey, step up your efforts and get more involved, because we need them. NATO countries need to be able to defend themselves and also to prevent," he added. / Adapt Pamphlet /
