Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested by the Federal Police. The decision was made by Supreme Court Judge Alexandre Moraes. The request for arrest was filed for violation of a precautionary measure, as Bolsonaro had been under house arrest since August, as well as police suspicions that he could escape.
The former president was sentenced to 27 years and three months for an attempted coup plot following his defeat in the 2022 elections.
Bolsonaro was arrested on the basis of a preventive arrest warrant issued by the Federal Supreme Court, the Brazilian Federal Police reported in a statement.
This is a preliminary detention, emphasizes "O Globo", and not the sentence of 27 years and three months. The former president was taken to the Superintendence of the Federal Police, where he will be held in a waiting room, a space reserved for authorities and high-ranking public figures.
The former president was arrested at around 6:00 am and the convoy carrying him arrived at the Federal Police headquarters at 6:35 am.
