Three people have been arrested on suspicion of collaborating with Russian intelligence services, the Metropolitan Police said.
On Thursday, October 23, three men aged 48, 45 and 44 were arrested in west and central London. Searches are ongoing for other members of the network.
Commander Dominic Murphy, Head of Counter Terrorism Policing in London, said that "we are seeing an increasing number of those we would describe as 'representatives' being recruited by foreign intelligence services and these arrests are directly linked to our ongoing efforts to disrupt this type of activity."
"Anyone who might be approached and tempted to carry out criminal activity on behalf of a foreign state in the UK should think twice. This type of activity will be investigated and anyone found involved can expect to be prosecuted and there are potentially very serious consequences for those convicted," he said.
The three men were arrested on suspicion of aiding a foreign intelligence service, a criminal offence under Section 3 of the National Security Act of 2023. The country to which the alleged criminal offences relate is Russia.
The suspects were escorted to a police station in London, according to law enforcement.
The arrests come as MI5 has urged politicians to "remain vigilant and trust their instincts" amid growing fears that foreign agents are infiltrating Britain's democratic institutions.
New guidelines issued earlier this month led MI5's National Protective Security Authority to issue a stark warning to MPs, councillors, candidates and parliamentary staff: "you are a potential target".
Security Minister Dan Jarvis told the House of Commons that the recommendations would help politicians develop a "better understanding of the threat" from countries such as Russia, China and Iran.
