Pope Francis greeted and blessed the faithful today at noon in St. Peter's Square in Rome.
Francis wished pilgrims a “Happy Palm Sunday and a Holy Week” and shook hands with priests, nuns and faithful from around the world. The pope was in a wheelchair today and for the first time since leaving the hospital, he did not use an oxygen machine.
"The sufferings of Jesus help us to feel compassion, when we extend our hand to those who are struggling, when we embrace those who have lost hope, when we lift those who have fallen. Sisters and brothers, to live this great miracle of mercy, let us choose how to carry the cross during Holy Week: not around our necks, but in our hearts."
"Not only ours, but also those who suffer next to us. Even that unknown man whom fate – is it fate? – caused us to meet. Let us prepare for Easter, let us become like Simon of Cyrene for each other," Pope Francis emphasized in his message today to the faithful.
Next Sunday, Christian believers around the world celebrate the feast of Easter, as during this week they remember the sufferings of Jesus Christ until the day of his Resurrection.
