The Greek 'left' in chaos, the disintegration of the largest

45 senior members of "Umbrella" have sent a letter to the Central Council of the party on the second day of the conference, as they have declared that they are leaving the largest opposition party in Greece.

The SYRIZA CQ meeting is up in the air after the withdrawal of the group of Efi Athcioglou, "Umbrella" and Dionisis Teboneras.

The meeting continues with depositions and will culminate with voting in the afternoon. It is not yet known what the leavers will do as they gather tonight to decide where they stand next.

Stefanos Kasselakis' initiative to demand a grassroots referendum on the removal of 4 official opposition officials (Nikos Fili, Panos Skourletis, Dimitris Vitsa and Stefanos Tzoumakas) created extreme intra-party turmoil, while rallying most intra-party tendencies against him.

For his part, Stefanos Kasselakis tried to make it clear at the start of the episodic meeting that he has no intention of retiring. He lashed out at those who doubted him, sparking a fierce debate.

This grouping is headed by the former Minister of Finance, Efklidhis Tsakalotos, who will declare tomorrow together with another of his members, as an independent deputy, reducing even more the parliamentary group of Syriza. The bickering and controversy within Syriza has prevailed in the immediate aftermath of the embarrassing defeat in the double parliamentary elections last May and June, as well as the resignation of its leader Alexis Tsipras.

But the gap between the various groups of the Left Radicals alliance has deepened especially after the election of its new leader, the homogenous Greek-American Stefanos Kasselakis, a person almost unknown to politics and the party itself.

The side of the lost candidates has since that day begun to express dissatisfaction by consecrating the new leader's ideological bases which, according to them, do not match the principles of the Left.

According to the Greek media, after the departure of the first large group, at least one more group is expected to leave Syriza in the coming hours, headed by the former Minister of Employment and candidate for the party's head, Efi Ahtsioglou.

This would bring another number of Syriza deputies to declare themselves independent, with the consequence that this party will no longer be the first opposition force in the Greek parliament, giving way to the Socialists of Pasok.

However, benefited from all this nonsense that has been going on for several months in the Greek Left, the conservatives come out, who are already playing in the field without any strong opponent.
