A serious incident has shocked Germany, after a leak of a chemical substance at a company's premises in Nuremberg caused the death of a worker, while 17 people were poisoned and ended up in hospital.
The incident occurred on Friday afternoon in an industrial park in the city, alerting authorities and emergency services. According to police, two workers were found unconscious inside the building, while one of them later died in hospital.
Dozens of firefighters and specialized teams, some of them equipped with protective suits against toxic substances, were mobilized to the scene. German media report that about 65 personnel participated in the operation to neutralize the leak and evacuate workers from the facility.
Bavarian authorities have announced that the situation has been brought under control and that there is no longer any danger to residents in the area, as the substance was isolated within the company. However, it remains unclear what type of chemical leaked and what caused the fatal incident.
