German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has continued his long-distance clash with US President Donald Trump. The German leader said he did not want his children to study or work in the US, opening up another area of conflict with Trump.
"I wouldn't advise his children to go to the US to study or work. I'm a big admirer of America, but at the moment my admiration is not growing ," he said during a discussion, citing the rapidly changing "social climate."
The remarks about the US immediately sparked a furious reaction from the Trump camp. Richard Grenell, who served as ambassador to Germany during Trump's first term, wrote on X that "Friedrich Merz has become the European President of the TDS Society," referring to the so-called Trump Derangement Syndrome.
"The Germans have a leader who has no strategy, and is completely controlled by the smart German media ," Grenell said.
