Elon Musk stirs up Italian politics with his views on immigrants...
The relationship between Elon Musk and the government of Giorgia Meloni is intertwined on several levels, being strengthened in these two years, also because of the special connection with the prime minister. And also with Matteo Salvini.
A friendship that was born before the elections, when the owner of X, Tesla and SpaceX unleashed one of his social storms in May 2022 with a Tweet about the refugee crisis in Italy: "the biggest threat to civilization".
And that finds a common front in the 'war' against judges, especially now that the White House is run by Republicans. So much so that from Palazzo Chigi, after the phone call with Donald Trump, there was also a conversation with Musk.
On June 15, 2023, the fight against the birth rate is among the issues at the center of the first face-to-face meeting between Meloni and Musk.
The other is Artificial Intelligence. That day, the tycoon toured the capital in a white Tesla, while eating spaghetti with clams he also had an exclusive visit to the Colosseum, where he imagined a war between "ancient Rome" and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.
When Meloni made her split from Andrea Giambruno official on social media, among the thousands of likes on her post was that of Musk, who a year later found himself dismissing hints of an intimate relationship with Meloni after they appeared together in gala evening for the Global Citizen Award 2024: "I was there with my mother. There is absolutely no romantic relationship with Prime Minister Meloni," he said.
In the middle is the invitation to Atreju, the FdI event, with Rishi Sunak and Edi Rama. But also the negotiations between the government and Tesla for the production of electric trucks and vans in Italy, and those with Starlink, the SpaceX satellite constellation to provide broadband Internet services in areas poorly covered by other networks. One contract that ended up at the center of an investigation is Musk's right-hand man in Italy, Andrea Stroppa, also under investigation.
The South African-born American entrepreneur also met with Salvini during his visit to Italy, where nuclear power and freedom were discussed. /Adapted from "Ansa"
