Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said today that the EU will delay the admission of Ukraine and Moldova, just like with Turkey.
He emphasized that Ankara has long since won the right to join the EU, but remains waiting for political reasons.
EU leaders agreed last week to start talks with Ukraine, even as it continues to face an invasion from Russia, also starting talks with Moldova.
However, the European Union failed to reach an agreement on a 50 billion euro financial aid package for Kiev due to Hungary's opposition.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed the move as a "victory" for Ukraine and the European continent.
Turkey has been a candidate since 2005
Speaking to reporters after returning from Hungary, Erdogan pointed out that Turkey, which has been a candidate for EU membership since 2005, has long earned the right to join, but has been delayed by the " "political obstacle".
“The fact that they were given the status of a candidate country does not mean that they will become members of the EU. A process will start with them, they will also be delayed. None of these countries is Turkey. It is wrong for Turkey, which is more willing to join the EU than some member states, to wait at the door for years because of political obstacles, Erdogan said.
Human rights in Cyprus
Turkey's bid to join the EU has been stalled for years due to concerns about the country's human rights protection status and the Cypriots.
The EU relies on the help of Turkey, a NATO member, to stop migrants.
Although accession is likely to be delayed, the Brussels summit's decision brings Ukraine one step closer to its long-term strategic goal of breaking free from Moscow's orbit.
Erdogan announced that Turkey's strategic and economic potential has long earned the right to join, which Ankara has characterized as its strategic goal.
He added that progress can be made in this process during the Hungarian presidency, with which Turkey has good relations.
“The EU must correct its mistake towards us”, he said.
