Iceland's largest volcano erupted on Monday in the southwest of the country, spewing lava and smoke, after weeks of intense earthquake activity. The eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula began around 10 p.m., after an earthquake, the Icelandic Meteorological Office said in a statement.
The office reported that the explosion was located near Hagafell, about 3 kilometers north of the town of Grindavík. In a statement on Tuesday, Iceland's government said the section of the fissure is almost 4 kilometers long. This is reportedly the fourth eruption in the area since 2021 and the largest so far.

Fearing the volcano might erupt, authorities last month evacuated nearly 4,000 residents of the fishing town of Grindavik and closed the nearby Blue Lagoon geothermal spa. Reykjavik's Keflavik International Airport remains open, albeit with extensive delays.

"Although the explosion is not expected to affect populated areas, it is releasing significant toxic gases. People are advised not to visit the site of the explosion while scientists are assessing the situation," the Icelandic Tourist Board said.
