None of the operating rooms at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza are functioning due to a lack of electricity, the director of the medical center said.
"Operating rooms are completely out of service and the wounded who come in, we can't give them anything other than first aid. Anyone who needs surgery dies and we can't do anything for them," said Dr. Muhammad Abu Salmiya.
The hospital's director said staff were struggling to keep babies born at the hospital alive as oxygen ran out and they had to be moved from incubators.
"I was with them a while ago. Now they are endangered, because we took them out of the incubators. We wrapped them in metal foil and put hot water next to them so that they stay warm," said Abu Salmiya.
The doctor said several children have died while in the intensive care unit over the past few days. The World Health Organization says Al-Shifa has been without electricity for three days.
"The hospital has been without electricity, without water and with very poor internet for three days, which has severely affected our ability to provide essential care," WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on social media platform X .
"Unfortunately, the hospital is no longer functioning as a hospital," he said.
