Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is in New York for the UN General Assembly, will cut short his visit to the US.
Within roughly an hour of his speech at the UN, multiple Israeli airstrikes were carried out in southern Beirut, which the military said targeted Hezbollah's headquarters.
Israel said the center was located under residential buildings in Dahieh, a suburb run by Hezbollah.
But the US, a key ally of Israel - which this week held out public hopes for a ceasefire - was given no warning of the attack.
" The United States was not involved in this operation and we had no advanced warning ," Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh told reporters.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke to his Israeli counterpart about the operation as it was underway, she added, although she would not say what he was told about the operation.
