German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called for new diplomatic efforts for peace in Ukraine, a week after talks on the issue in Saudi Arabia.
Representatives from about forty countries, including China, Germany, India and the United States, attended the August 5 meeting in Jeddah, to which Russia was not invited.
" It makes sense for us to continue these talks, because they increase the pressure on Russia to understand that it has gone down the wrong path and that it must withdraw its troops and make peace possible," the German chancellor said at the annual summit of summer. his interview on the ZDF television network.
Olaf Solz called the talks held at the level of Foreign Policy advisers, both in Jeddah recently and in Copenhagen in June, "very important" and added that "this is only the beginning".
Ukraine expressed satisfaction with the Saudi summit, during which it sought to win support for its ten-point peace plan, which includes the complete withdrawal of Russian forces from its territory.
Russia has announced that a peaceful solution is possible only if the Ukrainians surrender their weapons.
Kiev has repeatedly asked Berlin for long-range Taurus cruise missiles to boost the military capabilities of Ukrainian forces, but Germany has so far refused to grant the request, fearing the missiles would reach Russian territory, escalating the conflict.
Olaf Solz repeated in his interview today that Germany is the second supplier of military aid to Ukraine after the USA. But for the Taurus missiles, he refrained from giving a clear answer.
