Europe "obeys" Trump, Ukraine "disappears" from NATO Summit

A one-page draft of a joint statement for the upcoming NATO summit reportedly does not include Ukraine's membership aspirations.

The short document, seen by Bloomberg, also recognizes Russia as a threat to NATO, but not as an aggressor in Ukraine.

This signals that, for the first time since 2022, Russia's war in Ukraine will not be the main focus of NATO's annual summit, which takes place on June 24-25 in The Hague.

Last year's communiqué at the summit in Washington included a statement that Ukraine's path towards NATO is "irreversible" and promised more than $40 billion (£29 billion) in additional military aid.

This year, the document will focus solely on defense spending, as Donald Trump pushes NATO partners to increase their military spending from 2% to 5% of GDP.

Member states will also consider calculating their contributions to Ukraine as part of new defense spending targets, Bloomberg reported, adding that the final version of the statement could still change.

However, this is a sign that Trump's influence was the main reason for this action. Trump himself has stated that Ukraine must give up territories annexed by Russia and its ambitions for NATO membership if it is to reach an agreement to end the war.
