Beijing fears new escalation despite ceasefire; negotiations with US remain deadlocked after Tehran's refusal

The last time the Chinese embassy in Tehran issued such an announcement was on the eve of the outbreak of war between the United States, Israel and Iran. It was on February 27, when Beijing recommended its citizens in Iranian territory to “strengthen security measures and evacuate as soon as possible,” citing a “significant increase in external security risks.”

Now, the Chinese mission in Iran has reiterated a similar warning. The embassy and consulates have issued a notice urging Chinese citizens to strictly follow security guidelines, exercise maximum caution, avoid sensitive areas such as military and government installations, and, if possible, evacuate or relocate to safer regions.

The news has been reported by major Chinese media outlets. The Global Times, for example, writes that China's Foreign Ministry has long advised against any travel to Iran. Furthermore, a message published through the embassy's official WeChat account states that, although some parts of Iranian airspace have reopened, the regional situation remains highly uncertain and the security context is complex and constantly evolving.

The warning becomes even clearer: in case of emergency, citizens should immediately contact local police and seek assistance from Chinese diplomatic missions. Chinese authorities also emphasize that those who decide to travel to Iran despite this warning may face extremely high risks and that the possibility of receiving consular assistance may be significantly limited.

In other words, China has renewed its call for its citizens in Iran to leave as soon as possible, stressing that security risks continue, despite the fragile ceasefire that has suspended attacks.

The situation in Iran is currently at an unstable stage, with ceasefire violations, hidden maritime tensions and still-uncertain negotiations keeping the risk of a sudden escalation high. It is worth recalling that Donald Trump has extended the previous ceasefire to pave the way for a second round of talks in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, a key venue for mediation.

However, Iran's refusal to participate in the meeting, citing excessive demands from the United States and violations that undermine the ceasefire framework, has left the negotiations at an impasse.

Awaiting diplomatic developments, the assessments cited by the source indicate that China fears that the mutual threats between Iran and its adversaries could escalate at any moment into a new phase of direct confrontation. This explains the warning to its citizens to leave Iranian territory as soon as possible, especially if negotiations fail.
