Greek media have revealed details of the new Greek-French defense agreement following Emmanuel Macron's visit to Athens.
The defense cooperation agreement between Greece and France is expected to be signed soon, taking on important status at the national level for both countries.
On the Greek side, the document will be signed by Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis and Defense Minister Nikos Dendias. The agreement runs until 2031 and includes a new element that changes the way it will be renewed in the future.
The document includes a clause that automatically activates an extension for another five years, if neither party requests termination. In practice, this means that after the initial term ends, the agreement will continue until 2036 without the need for new approval by the respective governments.
This development is linked to the broader discussion on defense at the European level. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and French President Emmanuel Macron are pushing forward the idea of a more structured activation of Article 42, paragraph 7 of the Treaty on European Union, which provides for mutual support in the event of a threat.
During a public discussion, Macron emphasized France's support for Greece in the event of a threat to its sovereignty, signaling the strengthening of the bond between the two countries.
Expanding cooperation in several sectors
The defense agreement is only part of the cooperation package that is expected to be formalized. Mitsotakis and Macron will also sign a broader agreement that elevates the bilateral relationship to the level of a multi-level strategic partnership.
This partnership covers various areas such as economy, civil protection, migration, technology, environment, education and culture. Cooperation also extends within the framework of the European Union and international organizations.
In this context, the parties will also finalize special agreements related to education and innovation.
This development further consolidates the cooperation between the two countries and establishes a stable foundation for relations in the years to come.
