US President Joe Biden said yesterday that he had made a decision on how to respond to a drone strike that killed US soldiers in Jordan as he considered punishing Iran-backed militias without provoking a wider war.
He did not elaborate on his decision, which he made after consulting White House advisers.
Speaking to reporters, Biden said the United States does not need a wider war in the Middle East, in line with comments by other officials yesterday that the US does not want a war with Iran, Reuters reported.
Biden is considering options and is expected to have retaliatory attacks, but the timing of the response is unknown.
Asked if Iran was responsible, Biden said: "I hold them responsible in terms of supplying weapons" to those who carried out the attacks.
White House spokesman John Kirby said the US response could be multi-layered and involve multiple actions rather than just one.
After the deadly attack on US troops, Biden is under pressure to strike directly at Iran. Republicans accuse the Democratic president of allowing American soldiers to become clay pigeons. They said Iran is a test of Biden's strength ahead of the election.
The conflict will divide Western democracies into those, such as Britain, that will support Washington and those, such as Germany, France and Italy, that may favor diplomacy with Tehran. It would help China advance its anti-democratic geopolitical ambitions and Russia justify its aggression against Ukraine.
Three US soldiers were killed and 34 wounded in an attack by Iranian-backed militias on a US base in Jordan near the Syrian border. Iran claims it is not responsible, but few in Washington believe it, given Iran's long history of supporting, training and arming proxy militias, a policy followed by General Qasem Soleimani of Iran's Revolutionary Guards' Quds Force until The US killed him in January 2020.

"He must demand an end to the Israeli bombing of Gaza, implement a ceasefire that would free the Israeli hostages, and lead a credible international effort to finally create a two-state solution in Palestine," Tisdal says, concluding that he is in nobody's interest in a megabomb going off in the Middle East.
