The victory of the presidential elections by Donald Trump has completely changed the approach of the state and justice towards it. According to NBC News, officials at the Department of Justice are considering how to close two criminal cases against Donald Trump.
Citing two people familiar with the matter, NBC News reports that the department has concluded that no trial is possible anytime soon, either in the Jan. 6 uprising or in the allegations that he obtained classified documents from the House of Representatives. White.
The case involving the classified documents was dismissed by a judge in July, but is now subject to an appeal.
Both of these federal cases — meaning they involve the central government rather than a state chamber — are likely to face appeals all the way to the Supreme Court.
But officials are now seeking to uphold the longstanding policy that a sitting president cannot be prosecuted, NBC reports.
Sources said many questions remain unanswered. Could the issues resume after Trump leaves office? What happens to the evidence? What about the other two defendants accused of helping Trump hide classified documents?
Trump's legal team is also trying to resolve all pending cases against him, including the allegation that he tried to interfere in Georgia during the 2020 election.
He became the first former US president to be criminally convicted in May, when a jury in New York unanimously agreed that he was guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records to commit election fraud.
A hearing is scheduled for Nov. 26, but the immediate goal for Trump's team is to have it postponed indefinitely or fired.
