"Fordow was destroyed." This was one of several tweets by US President Donald Trump after the successful attack on Iran's nuclear targets.
Trump hopes that the strikes he ordered on three Iranian nuclear sites will push Tehran back into negotiations and currently has no plans to take further military action inside Iran, while pressuring Iranian leaders to "agree to end this war," according to sources familiar with the matter.
Trump had come to believe in recent days that US forces were needed to destroy Iran's fortified nuclear facilities, and made the decision when it became clear that diplomacy had stalled.
While Trump remains hopeful that diplomacy can continue, US forces in the region are prepared for a response from Iran.
Meanwhile, residents of a town near the Fordow plant heard explosions, Iranian state media reported.
Residents of the city of Qom, about 140 kilometers south of Tehran, heard several explosions outside their city, according to the Iranian state news agency FARS News.
The Fordow nuclear plant is located near Qom and is built inside a mountain.
According to FARS, the explosions occurred after the air defense system in Fordow was activated.
