Regional officials in Iran have confirmed that the nuclear facilities in Isfahan, Natanz and Fordow have been attacked, according to Iranian state media reports.
"A few hours ago, after the activation of air defense systems in Qom and the identification of hostile targets, part of the Fordow nuclear plant area was attacked by enemy air forces," a spokesman for the Qom region's crisis management center said, according to the Fars and IRNA news agencies.
The Fordow facility is located deep in the mountains of northern Iran and contains advanced centrifuges for enriching uranium to high levels of purity. It was believed that only American bunker-buster bombs would be able to damage the facility, due to its depth.
The deputy governor for security in Isfahan confirmed that the facilities in Isfahan and Natanz, located in central Iran, were also attacked.
"We saw penetrations near the nuclear facilities in Isfahan and Natanz, air defenses were activated to deal with hostile targets, but several explosions were heard," the deputy governor said.
According to Iranian media, the plants had been evacuated in advance.
