The French presidency has stated that Europeans and Ukrainians are asking the United States to provide security guarantees before any negotiations on the territories of eastern Ukraine occupied by Russia.
The Elysee Palace noted that there should be "full transparency on the security guarantees" that Europeans and Americans can give to Ukrainians on territorial issues.
" Europeans' expectations from the Americans may resemble a certain easement, what we call Article 5 of NATO, that is, an American security guarantee for those who participate in the Alliance of the Willing ," said an adviser to the French presidency.
The French official noted that there must be “full transparency on the security guarantees” that Europeans and Americans can provide to Ukrainians before any resolution of the territorial issue.
" The Ukrainians have not reached any agreement on the territory and are not thinking of reaching an agreement today ," the French presidency insisted, commenting on reports that Kiev is open to a possible demilitarization of the territories it still controls in Donbas and the Russians claim them.
" The Ukrainians have not reached an agreement on territories, they are not discussing an agreement on territories today, they are not discussing a demilitarized zone ," insisted the adviser to French President Emmanuel Macron.
According to this source, Ukraine, the US and European powers are still working to find a common position on the outline of a peace agreement that would be conveyed to Russia.
"Our goal is to have a common ground, a strong basis for negotiations. This common ground should unite Ukrainians, Americans and Europeans. It should allow us to make a negotiating offer, a strong peace offer that respects international law and Ukraine's interests, an offer that American negotiators will be willing to make to the Russians ," he added.
Macron's adviser noted that there is currently no joint text, but discussions will continue in the coming days, by phone and in person. He did not specify whether Washington has set a timeline.
