Danish secret services: New military conflict could be for the Arctic,

The United States is using its economic power to "impose its will" and threaten both friends and foes with military force at the North Pole, the Danish intelligence agency said.

Denmark's Defense Intelligence Agency says in its annual assessment Wednesday that the increase in U.S. law enforcement under President Donald Trump's administration comes at a time when China and Russia seek to reduce Washington's influence and intensify competition in the North Pole.

Trump expressed his desire for Greenland, as a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, to become part of the US, which Russia and a large number of European countries oppose.

"The strategic importance of the Arctic is growing as the conflict between Russia and the West intensifies, and the growing security and strategic focus of the US on the Arctic will further accelerate this development," the report said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia is concerned about NATO's activities in the Arctic and that it will respond by strengthening the military in the region.

The Danish report claims that “for many countries outside the West, entering into strategic agreements with China, rather than the US, has become a viable option,” while “China and Russia, along with other like-minded countries, are seeking to reduce Western and especially American global influence.”

"At the same time, uncertainty has increased about how the US will prioritize its resources in the future. This gives regional powers more room to maneuver, allowing them to choose between the US and China or find a balance between the two," the document added.

Trump refused to rule out the possibility of using force in Greenland, where the US has a military base.

"The US is using economic power, including threats of high tariffs, to impose its will, and the possibility of using military force, even against allies, is no longer ruled out," the report said.
