France disputes UN accusation of 'racism' in police: Their claims are baseless

The French government has rejected UN allegations of racism among law enforcement, which came after a 17-year-old was killed by police during a traffic stop.

" Any accusation of racism or systematic discrimination in the police force in France is completely unfounded ," said the foreign ministry.

Earlier, the UN called on France to take seriously the problems of racism and racial discrimination in law enforcement, days after the teenager was killed by a police officer. The UN also expressed its concern over the unrest that broke out in the country after the young man's death.

" The time has come for the country to take seriously the deep problems of racism and racial discrimination among law enforcement ," said Ravina Samdasani, spokeswoman for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, during a regular briefing on press from Geneva
