The Swedish Prime Minister calls for calm and reflection after the burning of

Sweden's prime minister, Ulf Kristersson, distanced himself from this week's protest in which an Iraqi living in Sweden burned the Muslim holy book the Koran outside a mosque in Stockholm.

The burning of the Koran caused outrage in parts of the Muslim world.

"It's hard to say what the consequences will be. I think there are a lot of people who have reason to reflect," Kristersson told a news conference.

"This is a serious safety question. There is no need to offend other people," Kristersson said.

On Wednesday, after being given permission by Swedish police to protest, Iraqi refugee Salwan Momika trampled over a copy of the Koran and set fire to several pages outside Stockholm's largest mosque.

The incident, which coincided with the start of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha and the end of the annual pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia, sparked protests in Iraq and elsewhere.

Kristersson called for calm and reflection.

Swedish police had given Momika, 37, permission to organize his protest in accordance with free speech protections.

They later said they had launched an investigation into "agitation against an ethnic group", noting that Momika had burned pages from the Muslim holy book.

"I think just because some things are legal, they're not necessarily appropriate," Kristersson said.

In Iraq, protesters on Thursday briefly stormed the grounds of the Swedish embassy in Baghdad.

"It is of course completely unacceptable to have people illegally entering Swedish embassies in other countries," Kristersson said.

The authorization for Momika's demonstration came two weeks after a Swedish appeals court rejected a police decision to deny permits for two protests in Stockholm, which would have included the burning of the Koran.

Police at the time had cited security concerns following the burning of the Koran outside the Turkish embassy in January, which led to protests, calls for a boycott of Swedish goods and further blocked Sweden's NATO membership process, which is being blocked. from Turkey.

After the burning of the Koran in January, Turkey temporarily suspended Sweden's NATO accession talks.
