With the hotbeds of war already open in Europe and the Middle East, the start of a nuclear conflict seems a move away. Occurring in these conditions, many countries have started to think about the worst. One of them is the Swedish government, which announced today that it will spend an extra 385 million kroner (33 million euros) on nuclear shelters, emergency services and civil protection, after warning that the country must prepare for war.
The country, which joined NATO in early March, is investing to improve the functioning of its emergency services in the event of conflict, strengthen its cyber security and replenish its medicine stocks.
Civil Defense Minister Karl-Oskar Bolin said the funds will also be used to modernize nuclear shelters, water supply and transport infrastructure.
" The situation in terms of security policy has long been deteriorating ," Bolin told reporters.
Sweden had been cutting its military spending since the end of the Cold War, but reversed the trend after Russia annexed Crimea in 2014. In March 2022, following the invasion of Ukraine, Sweden announced that it would further increase this spending to around 2% of GDP , a target set by NATO.
