Unmanned vehicles are replacing soldiers in the field, as Kiev becomes a hub for modern military technology...
The war in Ukraine is rapidly transforming into a technology-dominated conflict, with robots and drones taking on an increasingly decisive role on the battlefield.
On the front lines, the Ukrainian military is increasingly using unmanned ground vehicles – remote-controlled robots that transport supplies, conduct combat operations, and even replace soldiers in dangerous situations.
"This is the direction modern warfare is heading. All armies will be robotized," declared Viktor Pavlov, an officer in the Ukrainian army's third corps.
According to the Guardian , these robots come in various forms: some move on tracks like small armored vehicles, others with wheels and antennas, while some are equipped with anti-tank mines or automatic weapons. Their use has increased significantly since 2024.
According to the Ukrainian military, ground robots now make up about 90% of frontline logistics, transporting food, ammunition and evacuating the wounded. One robot can operate for up to eight hours and can extract up to three wounded soldiers from dangerous areas.
In addition to logistics, they are increasingly being used in direct combat. Some systems are equipped with machine guns and grenade launchers, while others are used as explosive “suicide bombers.” In one case, a robot carrying 200 kilograms of explosives traveled 20 kilometers and destroyed an object used by Russian troops.
Operators on the ground say these tools completely change the nature of warfare.
“It’s not Star Wars with lasers. It’s more like the Terminator. A robot comes to your position and you have nothing to do,” said an air brigade drone operator.
The main advantage is that robots do not feel pain and do not stop like soldiers, while being controlled remotely by operators who remain out of harm's way.
The rapid development of these technologies has turned Kiev into a center of military innovation. Engineers develop new systems, while soldiers on the front provide immediate feedback for improvements.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov stressed that the use of robots in dangerous operations has increased significantly:
"Today, robots enter high-risk areas to supply, support logistics, and evacuate the wounded, where sending soldiers would be too dangerous."
Even, in an unprecedented case, Russian soldiers have surrendered in the face of an armed robot, showing the changing nature of the conflict.
However, their use also comes at a cost. Ukrainian units lose robots to Russian airstrikes every day, but according to commanders, this is considered a small price to pay compared to the lives saved.
In a war that has already become a technological race, robots and drones are redefining the way modern battles are fought – and providing a glimpse of what the war of the future could be like.
