The Group of Seven (G7) countries have reiterated the fundamental importance of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), expressing concern about the development and modernization of nuclear arsenals by Russia and China.
In a statement by the Non-Proliferation Directors Group, member states underlined the need to take "concrete measures to reduce the risk" at a time when international tensions remain high.
The statement comes ahead of the month-long NPT Review Conference, which is expected to take place in New York. At this forum, the 191 states parties will seek to reach a common agreement on strengthening the treaty and its mechanisms.
In the same context, the G7 has called for the United States to play a stabilizing role in the global arena and contribute to building multilateral strategic stability.
Meanwhile, former US President Donald Trump has proposed a new nuclear deal between the US, Russia and China. He has also warned of the possibility of resuming nuclear tests, accusing China of developing covert activities in this area.
