It is not known whether the mines from the first round have yet been found and cleared.
According to a report published by the American media outlet Axios, citing a US official and a source with knowledge of the matter, US forces have identified Iranian mine-laying operations and are closely monitoring them.
The official added that the US is aware of the number of new mines that have been laid, but declined to provide details on how many. Experts estimate that fewer than 100 mines were laid by Iran.
This is the second time Iran has laid mines in the strategic waterway. It is not known whether the mines from the first round have yet been found and cleared. However, U.S. officials estimate that they have destroyed more than 90 percent of Iran’s large mine-laying vessels, which can carry two to four mines to be placed in the Strait of Hormuz. These vessels can also be equipped with rocket launchers and machine guns mounted to target large tankers.
Officials said the US Navy is using underwater drones in the Strait of Hormuz to clear mines.
