Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has accused the United States of abandoning internationally recognized diplomatic conventions for its own interests, particularly in dominating energy markets.
Lavrov said that Washington, in its relations with Latin America and the Middle East, is returning to a world where nothing exists in international law.
"The United States has officially declared that no one can dictate to them. The US is only interested in its own well-being and is ready to protect that well-being by any means, with coups, kidnappings or assassinations of the leaders of countries that possess natural resources that the Americans need. Venezuela, Iran, our American colleagues do not hide that this is about oil. They have a doctrine of dominance in global energy markets," Lavrov said.
Lavrov alluded to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in a US military operation in January and the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in joint US-Israeli airstrikes in late February.
The United States, Lavrov said, had “cut off” Europe, urging European states to abandon the now-damaged Nord Stream pipeline that carries Russian gas to Germany and supporting European Union calls to discourage Hungary and Slovakia from buying Russian gas.
"This is not an approach to international relations. It is an attempt to return to the colonial era," Lavrov said, denouncing European policy as driven by "arrogance and contempt for others."
By seeking a solution to the four-year war in Ukraine, he said, the United States was promoting the benefits of "great economic opportunities."
"At the same time, everything I just described is happening in parallel. They are taking us out of all global energy markets," Lavrov said.
