The United States is building a reinforced military presence in the Middle East, while the diplomatic process with Iran is approaching a decisive point. Military movements and public statements in recent days show that the US administration is keeping two tracks in operation in parallel: negotiations and preparation for intervention.
Flight tracking data and reports from open intelligence researchers confirm the deployment of F-22 and F-16 aircraft to the east. Some of them have arrived at bases in Europe, which function as a stopover before moving to the Middle East. At the same time, E-3 air control aircraft and a U-2 reconnaissance aircraft have been engaged, key elements for operational coordination and information collection in the event of an escalation.
On the naval front, the destroyer USS Pinckney joined the US Central Command (CENTCOM) area of responsibility. The US Navy currently has 12 warships in the region, including the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group in the Sea of Oman, accompanied by three destroyers. The USS Gerald R. Ford is also reportedly en route to the region. This force configuration goes beyond a routine presence and creates the capacity for extended air and naval operations.
The massive buildup of military equipment is the biggest indication yet that Trump may be preparing for large-scale strikes against Iran if high-stakes negotiations over the Islamic Republic's nuclear program and brutal crackdown on protesters fail.
The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Ford and its carrier strike group departed the Atlantic on Tuesday and are heading toward the Strait of Gibraltar, the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea, USNI reported.
The Ford, America's most advanced aircraft carrier and the largest ever built, is designed to carry more than 75 aircraft, including stealth F-35C Lightning II and F/A-18F Super Hornets, as well as radar-jamming EA-18G Growler fighter jets. The ship had been operating in the Caribbean Sea since mid-November as part of a U.S. naval force supporting Trump's operations in the South American nation.
Ford's deployment comes as part of a new military buildup in the Middle East, with Trump refusing to leave an attack on Iran off the table as negotiations stall.
