US President Donald Trump has reacted harshly to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, accusing him of making a big mistake regarding the possible loss of control over the strategic atoll of Diego Garcia.
Trump warned that the United Kingdom should not, under any circumstances, give up the island located at a key point in the Indian Ocean, through what he described as a dubious 100-year agreement with Mauritius.
According to him, such an agreement constitutes a serious mistake and giving up the territory would be a stain on one of the United States' greatest allies. Trump added that he has repeatedly emphasized to the British Prime Minister that long-term lease agreements are not a good solution when it comes to matters of state and strategic interests.
The US president also warned that, if Iran refuses to reach an agreement with the US, it may become necessary to use the base on Diego Garcia for military purposes.
The statements were made in the framework of the Peace Council, where, according to the White House, about 20 countries are expected to participate. Trump said that Iran must act quickly to reach an agreement in order to avoid more serious developments.
