Donald Trump secured victory in the 2024 Republican presidential primary in Iowa, asserting his dominance of the party despite a litany of legal problems as he seeks to defeat Democratic President Joe Biden.
According to CNN's projection, Trump will win the Iowa caucuses, solidifying his front-runner status as he competes as the Republican Party's 2024 nominee and retake the White House.
"This has been an incredible experience," Trump told supporters in a speech after the victory in Des Moines. "And they said, well, if you win by 12%, that's a big win. I think we've doubled it. I think it's probably tripled. I feel great and I'm honored by such an early announcement of victory. We we have to take our country back. This is the time for our country to come back together, whether you're a Republican or a Democrat, it's time to come together and solve the problems," Trump said.
He thanked his Republican rivals in the race Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley, as well as his wife Melania.
The former president accused current President Joe Biden of being the worst in US history, and said the trials against him were "election interference" engineered by the president.
According to the results reported by the country's leading newspapers and networks, Trump received 51% of the vote, DeSantis came in second with 21% and Haley in third place with 19% of the vote.
Iowa will send 40 delegates to the Republican National Convention, scheduled for July 15-18 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A total of 2,500 people will vote at the convention. To win the Republican Party's presidential nomination, a candidate needs the votes of 1,215 delegates.
