Houthi rebels in Yemen have claimed responsibility for the attack on a US-owned cargo ship off Yemen's southern coast earlier today.
Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree says the group's naval forces carried out a military operation targeting a US ship in the Gulf of Aden with missiles.
The spokesman also says that all US and British ships and warships participating in the "aggression" against Yemen will be targeted.
He added that a response to the American and British attacks is coming inevitably and that any new attacks will not go unanswered and unpunished.
Meanwhile, on the other hand, an American maritime security expert stated that the US-led operation to protect commercial ships around Yemen from Houthi attacks is a very successful operation.
Asked why the large amount of US equipment in the region was unable to stop missiles fired by the Houthis hitting ships in the Gulf of Aden, Joshua Hutchinson told Sky News that it is "a vast area" which "crosses over thousands and thousands of miles".
" What we need to assert is that Operation Prosperity Garden, which is a US operation that 20 countries initially signed up to, is a defensive operation. They are providing air support and air mitigation for merchant ships that go through there. While we have seen some [missiles] penetrate, this is a very successful operation ," he said.
He pointed out that before the cargo ship Gibraltar Eagle was hit today, 12 coalition-affiliated ships passed safely through the Gulf of Aden without any problems.
