Minister seeks EU involvement in resolving minority rights issue
The chairman of the Albanian Alternative party and Minister of Economic Development, Nik Gjeloshaj, stated that the Albanian Forum supports the introduction of open electoral lists as an important step towards greater democratization of the electoral system, but clearly emphasizes that without guaranteed mandates for the Albanian and Croatian communities, there can be no full electoral justice nor true European reforms.
He made this statement today through an official announcement.
Gjeloshaj announced that he will submit an amendment to the parliamentary procedure for the restoration of guaranteed mandates, describing this as a key condition for a fair and inclusive electoral system.
He also emphasized that the leaders of the parliamentary majority parties, by signing the agreement, have assumed the obligation to resolve this issue.
" In this context, we also expect constructive involvement of international partners, especially the European Union Delegation to Montenegro, with the aim of supporting the resolution of the issue of minority rights in accordance with European standards, considering that this issue is part of the obligations that must be fulfilled for the closure of negotiation chapters ," emphasized Gjeloshaj.
He added that the European path means equality and full protection of rights for all communities.
Meanwhile, as reported by the media outlet "Vijesti", the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) will propose amendments and supplements to the Law on the Election of Councilors and Deputies, which foresee the introduction of the open electoral list model.
This model allows voters, in addition to voting for the electoral list, to also express preferential support for candidates from that list.
On the other hand, the Cabinet of the President of Montenegro, Jakov Milatović, stated today that it is positive that the DPS is now proposing something that it had opposed for years.
