Ukraine has launched one of the most extensive drone airstrikes since the Russian invasion began in February 2022, launching hundreds of unmanned aerial vehicles into Russian territory overnight. The Russian Defense Ministry said 283 drones were launched, in an operation that marks another escalation in the use of unmanned technology in the conflict.
According to reports from Reuters, the BBC and Russian media outlets such as RIA Novosti, authorities in Moscow claim that all the drones have been neutralized by air defense systems and that there have been no casualties. However, information from the regions suggests a more complicated situation on the ground.
In the Rostov region, near the border with Ukraine, about 90 drones were directed at various targets, forcing authorities to activate emergency measures. Meanwhile, in the Saratov region, local officials confirmed that a drone attack had injured at least two people and caused damage to residential buildings.
According to international media analysis, the attack shows Ukraine's growing capacity to strike deep inside Russian territory, targeting strategic infrastructure and exerting psychological pressure on the Russian population and authorities. This development comes at a time when both sides have intensified the use of drones on the battlefield.
On the diplomatic front, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that delegations from Ukraine and the United States are expected to meet in Washington for a new round of talks. According to him, the goal is to restore a negotiating framework to end the war, which has entered its fourth year.
Previous talks between Russia and Ukraine, brokered by the US, were suspended after escalating tensions in the Middle East following the February 28 attacks on Iran, which temporarily shifted the international diplomatic focus.
