Germany, with its eyes on Trump, wants to fix relations with the former

Germany should take seriously the prospect of a second term for Donald Trump in the White House, the German government's coordinator for transatlantic relations said today, after Trump secured another victory in the Republican presidential election.

Michael Link said Berlin should pursue the "doughnut strategy" to mitigate the damage Trump could cause to US-German relations if he wins the election in November.

"In this case, we have to follow the so-called "donut strategy". This means that we will create relationships with contacts around him, and with internal actors who can veto decisions" , said Link to the German Agency.

Cultivating relationships with officials at various levels of the US government and within Trump's inner circle would serve "as a huge safety cushion around Trump", said Link, who is a member of parliament for the Free Democrats (FDP).

The best way to achieve this is to build on common interests, for example in economic and trade relations.

"There are a number of actors in the United States, like businessmen and governors, who don't want Trump to hurt them by starting, for example, a trade war with the EU. Germany and Europe should use the time until the election of November 5 in the USA to strengthen their competitiveness. Europe must be a strong partner to be taken seriously both in the economy, but also in the direction of NATO " , concluded Link.

Trump's last remaining challenger in the race for the Republican nomination, former UN ambassador Nikki Haley, will be struggling after yesterday's loss in New Hampshire.

But if she makes it to the primary in her home state of South Carolina, surprises are still possible, though not likely.

DPA points out that after the New Hampshire vote, a repeat of the 2020 election duel between Trump and Democratic President Joe Biden looks increasingly likely. /DPA
