Given the chaotic situation sweeping the world, Germany is discussing the possibility of reintroducing compulsory military service to increase the country's defense capability, following concerns that the capabilities of the armed forces are insufficient.
The Bundeswehr Reservists Association has called for a swift return to military service, highlighting the need for 20,000 new soldiers this year. The move comes after signs of a withdrawal of military support for Ukraine by the US.
Defense Minister Boris Pistorius of the SPD is skeptical about reinstating compulsory military service, citing the lack of sufficient barracks to house all recruits.
Pistorius suggested that options could be offered to those who really want to serve and need more soldiers. Meanwhile, the CDU/CSU Union, including politician Florian Hahn, is calling for the return of compulsory service within a year.
CSU politician Thomas Silberhorn pointed out that the Bundeswehr has only 180,000 soldiers, below the former capacity of 185,000, which was set when compulsory service was suspended in 2011. He said that around 270,000 soldiers would be needed to meet defense requirements.
