German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that he is watching with interest how the Meloni-Rama agreement will be implemented for the opening of refugee reception centers in Gjadër, Albania.
Scholz said during a conference with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, on Wednesday evening, 22.11.2023. in Berlin, that the agreement has been investigated by the EU Commission, and that it is in accordance with European law.
"It is interesting for us to see how it will develop", to the question whether the agreement could serve as an example for Germany, Scholz answered with reserve, noting the neighboring relationship between Albania and Italy: "There is a specificity here that concerns with the territorial neighborhood between the two countries: They are separated by only one sea". As for Germany, Scholz said that he is trying to create alliances on an equal level with the countries of origin, especially African ones.
Meloni said that the agreement with Albania is a "framework agreement that must be completed with the appropriate details and norms". She said that Albania will also do "the maximum to turn it into an innovative agreement that could serve as a basis for similar agreements with third countries". When this will happen, it will be seen, Meloni said.
The Meloni-Rama deal in early November sparked a wide-ranging debate in Germany, as Germany and other countries also struggle to find partners that accept refugees. Scholz had been at the beginning of the month himself in several African countries, such as Ghana and Nigeria, but none of them had shown themselves ready to open such reception centers.
The press conference between Giorgia Meloni and Olaf Scholz in Berlin took place after the two heads of state signed an action plan for deepening relations in the fields of economy, defense, climate protection and migration. Meloni called it historic. The last governmental consultations between the two European states were held 16 years ago. /DW
