The UN's top court has ordered Israel to take all measures to prevent genocidal acts in Gaza, but has not ordered an immediate ceasefire.

The court said on Friday it has jurisdiction to rule on emergency measures sought by South Africa in the case against Israel in its war against Hamas in Gaza.

Hamas, the Palestinian group that leads the Gaza Strip, has been declared a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.

A verdict on genocide may take years to prove, but the order on the war in Gaza that Pretoria asked the ICJ could come much sooner.

"The Court considers that the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is in serious danger of further deterioration before the Court renders its final decision. The Court considers that there is an urgency in the sense that there is a real and immediate danger that caused irreparable prejudice to the rights found by the court to be credible before rendering its final decision.” it is said in the decision of the International Court.

South Africa asked the court to issue "interim measures" ordering Israel to stop its war, which it said was "necessary in this case to protect itself from further, grave and irreparable harm to the rights of the Palestinian people".

Meanwhile, US media reports that the head of the CIA will meet in the coming days with Israeli, Qatari and Egyptian officials to discuss a possible new ceasefire in Gaza.

Israel's retaliatory strikes in Gaza have killed 25,900 people, mostly women and children, the Hamas-run health ministry says.

The current war began after Hamas attacked southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing around 1,300 people, mostly civilians, and taking 240 people hostage.
