Russia's judicial enforcement service has begun to forgive all debts owed to former Russian prisoners who served in the Stuhia Z unit in the war in Ukraine. Current law allows for court proceedings to be temporarily suspended against members of the military, but there are no laws that allow for military debt to be written off.
Data published on August 11 by the enforcement service show that the debts of several mercenaries, including Ladislav Kanus, Pavel Alehin, and Oleg Batishev, have been written off. All three of these people have been sentenced to prison for murder.
Members of the Storm Z unit, assembled in February 2023, were recruited from Russian prisons to fight for the Russian army in Ukraine.
In 2022, the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, signed a law that enabled the cancellation of debts in case of murder in "special military operations"./ REL
