America's Great Dilemma; "old man" Biden or "divisive"

In states and cities, even within families, there is extreme division; people are either for or against Trump...

Standing in front of the Capitol building in Washington on March 4, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln stirred the hearts of his audience, declaring that America should have "malice toward none and charity toward all."

It was Lincoln's second inaugural address and he was determined to heal a divided nation just weeks away from the official end of his bloody civil war, stating his intention "to achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace , among all nations.”

But this grand and evocative speech, as well as the actions of one of America's greatest Republicans, now stand in stark contrast to the words and deeds of another Republican — the former president of the United States, Donald J. Trump.

Trump is focused on his own glory, his own interests – not the nation's. He sows the seed of wrath through the land. And its true threat was finally brought to light in the report of the Bipartisan Congressional Investigative Committee on the January 6 uprising, when the US Congress was surrounded and Trump's "stolen election" plot turned into a de facto coup attempt , with criminal intent to subvert votes in seven states.

It's a relief that the Trump conspirator is now being brought to court by Special Counsel Jack Smith, but the fear must still exist.

Trump seems like a dark throwback to the 19th century, when the American Civil War broke out because people like John C. Calhoun, Nathan B. Forrest and Jefferson Davis wanted their truth to prevail. The result: a bloody breakup.

Trump now similarly wants his truth to triumph. And while that hopefully doesn't mean an actual civil war, the US is in the midst of a disorienting cultural civil war.

In states and cities, even within families, there is extreme division; people are either for or against Trump. One can see the clear and present danger playing out on social media and be left wondering when it will end. It is also becoming increasingly difficult not to conclude that Trump is a serious threat to the preservation of the unity of the American states.

To be frank, I'm not even for the current president Joe Biden. I find it almost impossible to understand why the Democrats have decided to endorse this old man as their presidential candidate and why it is not possible for both Republicans and Democrats to field candidates at least younger than 70 years old.

Moreover, the burning question for those of us across the Atlantic is, what can and should we do in Europe given these troubling developments?

First, we must understand that a year before a presidential election, Europe's relationship with the US always gets complicated, and this election season is likely to become much more so than usual.

The country and the government will focus on themselves and Europe does not have to wait long until the inauguration of the next president in January 2025.

So let's not fall into the same web of division and hatred that Trump spins to ensnare Americans. This time let justice prevail. And let there be a "just and lasting peace." /Adapted "Pamphlet" from "Politico"
