Attorney General Merrick Garland has announced that he will appoint a special prosecutor in the case against Mr. Hunter Biden, deepening the investigation into President Biden's son on the eve of the 2024 presidential election.
Garland said Friday that he will appoint State Attorney David Weiss, of Dellauer, who is currently investigating the president's son's financial and business activities, as special prosecutor in the case.
Garland stated on Tuesday that Mr. Weiss had told him that "in his judgment, the investigation had reached a stage where his further functions could only proceed with the status of Special Prosecutor and he asked me to appoint him in such a position."
" After reviewing his request, as well as the extraordinary circumstances surrounding this case, I have come to the conclusion that it is in the public interest to appoint him as a special prosecutor," said Garland .
The move is an important step by Garland, who is known to be cautious, and comes at a time when the Justice Department is conducting a series of investigations into former President Donald Trump, President Biden's main rival in next year's election.
The appointment of the special prosecutor was also made alongside the investigation that Republican lawmakers are preparing for Hunter Biden's businesses./ VOA
