In Italy, one of the most sensational trials regarding the war against the mafia has taken place. Over 200 members of the 'Ndrangheta have been sentenced to a total of more than 2,200 years in prison.
Founded in the 18th century in Calabria, it has become one of the most powerful, broadest and richest criminal organizations in the world.
The three-year trial involved mobsters, businessmen and politicians and included charges of murder, corruption, drug trafficking, money laundering and extortion.
Since they retired on October 16 to review their decisions, the three judges had to live in a safe house under police protection.
Some 67 defendants who were part of the original indictment have now been found guilty after opting for a speedy trial.
More than 80 defendants were acquitted, according to a list of verdicts on the Corriere Della Calabria news website.
However, sentences of up to 30 years have been given to more than 200 convicted persons.
Among those found guilty include Domenico Tomaino, known as 'The Wolf', who was sentenced to 17 years; Francesco Barbieri 'the fat man', who was sentenced to 24 years; and Vincenzo Barba, known as 'The Musician', who was sentenced to 28 years.
Former Forza Italia MP Giancarlo Pittelli, one of the most high-profile defendants, was sentenced to 11 years for being a Mafia broker.
The heads of the two Ndrangheta clans, Saverio Razionale and Domenico Bonavota, were both sentenced to 30 years.
