Iran has banned steel exports, the Iranian Fars news agency reported, after two of the sector's largest companies announced in early April that they could suspend activity following Israeli-American air strikes.
According to Fars, which refers to the Iranian customs authority, the order to ban exports was published and came into effect on April 26.
In late March, the Khuzestan Steel Company, in southwestern Iran, and the Mobarakeh Company, in Isfahan province in the center of the country, were hit by bombings.
According to local media, citing the Iranian Steel Industry Association, the country exported steel worth $6.1 billion in the period from the end of March 2025 to the end of January 2026.
Steel is considered a material of strategic importance, as it is used in industrial and military production, including the construction of missiles, drones, and ships.
