British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has authorized the UK armed forces to take stronger action against ships linked to the so-called "Russian shadow fleet."
The measures include inspections, boarding and, in certain cases, even seizure of ships within British territorial waters.
According to government sources, the Royal Navy and special forces will have expanded powers to conduct reconnaissance operations against tankers suspected of being used to evade Western sanctions by transporting Russian oil.
The so-called “shadow fleet” consists of a network of old ships with unclear ownership, which frequently change flags, disable tracking systems and carry out secret transfers of oil from one ship to another. It is estimated that these vessels transport up to 75% of Russian oil to international markets, becoming a significant source of income for Russia during the war in Ukraine.
According to analysts, this decision marks a shift from passive monitoring of sanctions to their active enforcement, including not only inspections but also possible seizure of ships and legal prosecution of the companies and crews involved.
However, experts warn that such measures could increase tensions between London and Moscow. Possible incidents in busy areas such as the English Channel could lead to wider clashes between NATO and Russia.
For his part, Starmer stressed that the aim of this move is to hit the Kremlin's financial resources. According to him, these measures will help limit the income that, according to London, is used to finance the war, while Russia continues to be considered a significant threat to the West.
