Alireza Tangsiri, the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy, was killed in an airstrike in the port city of Bandar Abbas, according to an Israeli official. So far, there has been no official confirmation from Iranian authorities or the Israeli military.
Tangsir played an important role in Iran's maritime strategy. He was directly linked to plans to control and, in case of a crisis, close the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil transport.
His military career spanned several decades. He served as a brigade commander during the Iran–Iraq War and later commanded the Revolutionary Guards' First Naval District in Bandar Abbas. In public discourse, he was known for his strong stances against the United States. In 2007, he declared that Iranian forces would "pursue them all the way to the Gulf of Mexico" in the event of a confrontation.
In 2018, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei appointed him head of the Revolutionary Guards Navy. During his tenure, Iran unveiled new naval military projects, including an aircraft carrier built on a modified merchant ship, to be unveiled in 2025.
Tangsiri was also subject to US sanctions. The US Treasury Department designated him a “Specially Designated Global Terrorist” in 2019, and in 2024 he was included in other punitive measures for his links to the Iranian drone industry.
The event takes place in a climate of high tensions in the region and could have consequences for maritime security, especially in strategic energy transport areas.
